Yoga and Ayurveda complement each other perfectly, but have you asked why? There are a couple of points to make but one of the main commonalities is that they both aim at helping us acting in the present. In the now we make better decisions and are able to judge the situation for what it is. The power is in the now like the famous Mr Tolle says.

MINDFUL DECISIONS

For successful judgements, or we could call them “yogic” decisions, we need a state of mindfulness so that we act from a place of relative objectivity and understanding that everything is contextual. Nothing can be judged as absolute. Anything can be good and anything can be equally bad, depending on the context.

Understanding relativity is essential if and when you live ayurvedically, especially regarding decisions on what you eat and do. Sometimes it’s good to eat spinach, sometimes not. Coffee brightens your day today and tomorrow it gives you jitters. Being in the now is very important when it comes to choosing what to eat because there’s nothing like the present moment to define the nutritional value.

FEELING YOUR FOOD

To understand the value of our food we need to connect with the present moment and see how food feels like in the when we consume it and moreover, how our bodymind feels like. Sounds a bit fuzzy as a concept but I’ll give you an easy example. If you feel cold you probably feel like having a hot drink rather than a cold one. Cooling drinks are nice when you quickly need to lower down the heat, for example after a run. This concept can be taken very far in everything we eat or do. If you feel lethargic, a nice walk or even a visit at a gym will spark up your day whilst moving on the spectrum between slow and fast

If there is a match between opposite feelings, then food has a potential of being healthy. No need for nutritional labels or counting calories. We just need to focus on what the body is telling and what sensory messages the food in question provides.

BACK TO THE NOW

But, let me take you back to what I started writing about, about being in the NOW. There is a connection, mind you, and it is because when you are in the now, you are able to connect with feelings that come through sensory experiences. When you are in the now, you feel. When you are not in the now you plan the future or contemplate the past. Or worse, worry about future or ruminate on the past. That’s when the mind takes the primary role. When you let yourself feel, you immediately take charge of the present moment.

In a yogic model the aim in our everyday life is to slow down the mind, expressed in the Sanskrit frase chitta vritti nirodah. Once you step into the now and start feeling life in the present, you’ve achieved your yogic goal. You might think this is difficult. Fortunately, it is super easy. The difficult thing is to remember doing it, staying in the present.

Not to worry! Here’s how to do it and you can easily learn how to be present, even if you don’t consider being “into yoga”:

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO BE IN THE NOW

Deliberately slow down your movements for just a notch. Talk, walk, type or whatever, do it a bit slower and you are in the present. It’s that simple.

Start by choosing one activity of your choice that you carry out every day, no matter what, like dressing up, or making a cup of tea or that typing. Keep slowness going and you’ll notice that, as if by magic, you gain time because all the faffing around is gone. Secondly, you remember things because you are present in what you do. Then you start increasing in productivity and creativity as a result of a controlled thought processes.

Try, it’s fun and such a revelation!

I’ve just burped up the aftertaste of some most excellent seasonal delights. You may say yuk but wait a moment: this is the best burp in the world, the one that brings back in the mouth the flavour of the most excellent food I’ve just enjoyed. It extends my dining experience a bit further, tickling my palate and satisfying my need to reach out for more. The meal was deliciously pungent, bitter and and hot. Just the way spring food should be.

Ayurvedically, burp is one of the signs you’ve had enough.

The meal in question was steamed purple sprouting broccoli tops with crushed toasted and salted almonds crowned with a thick wild garlic pesto from our garden. This is me in heaven.

Green is the colour of the season. We easily crave crunchy things in spring so a handful of (out of season) salted marcona almonds work fine. Toasted sunflower seeds, pine nuts or walnuts would work even better but almonds are what I have at hand.

Preparation is simple: just steam or oven roast the broccoli with salt, olive oil and chilli flakes. Then add crushed almonds, splash of balsamic vinegar and salt to season. The magic on these sprouting greens is the wild garlic pesto. Having picked up the leaves with roots from our garden, I mixed them with lemon and sunflower oil, then salted and peppered. A good dollop of this majestically intense green sauce went on to of the broccoli and down in my throat. It finally provided a satisfying “I’ve-had-enough’ burp.

The post prandial burp is a sign of satiety your body expresses after a meal. It is a healthy thing and if it brings a sweet memory of the meal you just enjoyed, you are on the path to good digestion. Bad taste, excess burping and other discomfort signals the opposite. Sour, acidic tastes show you you’ve done something wrong. But, let’s not elaborate on that now, just savour this bitter, pungent and sweet memory of broccoli and wild garlic.

Study Ayurveda at our Academy!

Jivita Academy of Ayurveda offers high-level and accredited courses in Ayurveda. The courses cover all aspects of Ayurveda at several levels, from a professional Ayurvedic Nutrition qualification to an intensive three-month long certification in Ayurvedic Body Therapy, and to Online Health Coaching Program.

We offer a variety of options for studying Ayurveda in a way that suits your various goals, needs and schedules.

If you would like to study Ayurveda and wish to receive more information, please do not hesitate to contact us in anu@jivitaayurveda.com.l

Safron Season

My daughter brought me a beautiful purple crocus from the park. It had a the sweet and light fragrance of saffron. I remembered the times I’ve dreamt about being a farmer in the Mediterranean and particularly a crocus farmer…. My daughter almost got a bollocking for picking up that beauty, instead I let the good will prevail secretly wanting her to keep bringing me flowers for years to come.

The point here is not my daughter but the crocuses. They sign the new season with their delicate presence, pushing upwards the symmetry of their petals. Spring is here when we see nature waking up. The trees start pushing buds for their leaves and sudden warmth surprises us after the last effort of the ending winter. No reminders of the icy days just a week or two ago. Instead, we have flower power in the park and people finally smiling in hope of the pandemic is ending soon.

So, back to the crocus, why is it growing just now? Why does it want to push its leaves through the snow, mud and cold spring air? If we study the crocus a bit closer, we find it has something very particular inside the petals. The stamen of the crocus is called saffron, the spice more precious than gold. Saffron in North West London! Have no doubts, the ones in Queen’s Park won’t be from a subspecies that would make it worth go saffron digging in hope of great rewards, still, their beautiful fragrance and deserves our appreciation.

Saffron is precious not only because it has a strong flavour and fragrance. It is a highly medicinal plant against all seasonal spring disorders, especially mucous. It is a powerful remedy because it is good for all body types. Even if it is a warming spice it is still a powerful anti-inflammatory. In Sansrkit this herb is called cumcuma and has a particularly holy place in the eastern rituals. The bindi, the dot on the third eye, is often made out of saffron.

Saffron is a strong blood and liver purifier. After the winter we need to clear the pathways that allow us to detoxify the excess we’ve kept on in winter. Liver purification always reflects on our skin. Even if is applied directly on the skin it maintains its medicinal properties and therefore is one of the most used herbs in beauty industry.

Saffron is a fertility herb and reproductive tonic. Generally, all deeply red products of nature are this, such as pomegranate. Try the combo of three reds of cranberries, rose and saffron decoction / tea for urinary tract infection.

Like all plants and herbs that grow in spring, crocus and its saffron stamens lighten up the body, they pull excess liquids out (diuretic), scrape fat and mucous and relax the mind. As a tonic for the mind saffron has been used throughout the time. You should, however, make sure you get a good quality saffron. The spice industry is full of false promises of ethically sourced, organic and pure single sourced products so be mindful where you buy. Expensive herbs are particularly susceptible for cuts and mixes. I heard once that they it is a practice sometimes to put other fragranced stamens or even plastic pieces in the mix with real crocus stamens for increasing the profits. That said, You are most probably going be more safe buying organic than non-organic. I personally use Steenberg’s herbs saffron.

Saffron grown in this season because it provides medicine for the earthlings during this period of scarcity. Its qualities or attributes of light, dry, mobile, astringent and pungent make it a perfect balancer for cold, heavy and slow spring weather.

Spring is also a time to fast in order to boost the detoxification process naturally occurring for wild animals and indigenous humans who live in nature. Scarcity of spring can be tough but necessary to clear the system and fortify the liver for the times of abundance ahead. I recommend you do one, two or more days a week by skipping your supper and replacing it with this delicious cardamon and saffron mylk. You should use a plant based milk and preferably one that is not made out of nuts. Nuts are autumn and winter food. Lighter options sync better with the season. Some light fat is necessary for this drink to be satiating to replace a whole meal. These fats do not get stored but used cleverly for our metabolic function and especially fat removal. Believe it or not, you need to have fat to remove fat!

As regards honey in this drink, add it only when it is palatable. Never add honey in a hot drink or you lose the benefits of it. Honey, saffron and cardamom are some of the best ingredients to guide our bodies to do exactly what they should in spring: detoxify.

1 cup of organic oat or rice milk

1 tsp ghee / coconut oil

3 pods cardamom

Pinch of saffron

Honey to taste

Heat up all ingredients except honey in a pot and let stay on a very low fire for 20min then mix in a blender to transfer fat into foam. Once blended the temperature should have come down to a palatable level. Then add honey and enjoy your supper!
