You might have heard of panchakarma, the signature detox program of Indian tradition, highly successful in restoring body’s own ability to heal itself, in other words, improving self-regulation. This means improved digestion and nutrient intake, enhanced immunity, and recovery from chronic lifestyle disorders such as auto-immune disorders, inflammation, skin disorders and of course, stress.

Panchakarma is, however, only one end of the spectrum. It is the most vigorous form of detoxification in Ayurveda. On the other end we have a daily and seasonal, natural occurrence of waste disposal from the body. This can be achieved efficiently with timed meals seasonal diet and lifestyle. In between, there are numerous options, depending on the time and resources available.

One thing that all detox programs, not only ayurvedic, should include. This is lack of stress and avoidance of anything cold, inside and outside.

Stress and cold cause constriction. The body becomes tight by the expectation or the actual experience of fear. The same constriction happens when we feel cold.

Constriction changes the patterns of blood flow, gut motility and lymphatic drainage. Warmth and a perceived sensation of safety and comfort are essential during detoxification.

Success depends highly on how stress is managed and the body is kept warm. As in panchakarma so in home detox (and anything in between) the first questions one needs to ask are: am I safe and comfortable with this program, am I happy with the food choices during this program, am I able to consider hunger as a fleeting moment rather than pain, am I stressed by work or any environmental, social or even climatic factor.

Apart from the self explanatory warm clothing (especially feet, wrists, lower back, head and neck) and a set of stress management tools, stress and cold can be managed with massages with warm oil and heat therapies. They should be done daily in addition to the intake of herbs and other remedies to enhance the flow, elimination of waste and removal of toxins.

Relaxing massages are a must if you try to detoxify in a stressful environment. It is the best antidote when life is the way it is an it cannot be changed.

For the best results in detoxing, stressors of life should be avoided and, of course, the program itself should not create stress. Embarking on a detox program that does not feel safe, for example, liquid fast when you have never fasted in your life, is going to end without desired results. Stamina with hunger is also something to consider and it is indeed a source of stress for many. Intermittent fasting is essential during detox and if hunger is not something one cannot manage, then the program needs tweaking. On top of that add work life, family, the dog, neighbours, commuting, traffic and especially social media can all be sources of tension and need to be taken into account.

For a good detox program to work, there are a set of variables to consider and the best way to get one, especially for you, is to come and have a chat with me in a consultation. Together we can find the best solutions to make sure the toxins really come out. The options start from daily home detox, quick detox in the clinic, urban panchakarma and even a residential private retreat in Dorset. Optimised for individual needs.

Now that we’ve transitioned to the new season, we are facing a new set of environmental pressure by the qualities of the climate. These are mainly dry, cold and light. These qualities irritate the nerves.

Dryness affects our mucous lining and provokes sneezing fits by exposed nerve endings in the nose. The result is watery mucous and lowered immune response. That’s how we get susceptible for viruses and bacteria of the season. Dryness also affects the skin which becomes itchy and rough, the gut dries up and we get constipated. Lightness makes the nerves unstable and interferes with sleep and consequently our mood. The feeling of ungroundedness is common and it manifests often, together with the other qualities attacking the nerves as anxiety.

Anxiety is an emotional response of the body to a feeling of fear. The thing is, you don’t really need to have anything specific to fear. If you do not protect yourself against the seasonal qualities, you might create a sensation of fear out of nowhere. You start magnifying things that have no real impact, especially during those early morning hours between 3 and 4am. That’s when vata energy peaks, lightness affects our sleep and it might be hard to get back to sleep with those magnified fears.

The answer to rising anxiety and all other seasonal health issues is obviously dictated by the principle of opposites: warm, heavy, grounding and calming diet and lifestyle. This is, in fact, the time when we naturally crave carbs, which are heavy and comforting. Comfort really is the word of the season.

One way of creating safety and comfort is by making sure neck, ankles, wrists and lower back or kidneys are warm. Make sure you always have extra layer with you when you know you’re coming home late.

Hot water bottle is your best friend in terms of anxiety led sleeplessness. Take it to bed and place it on your heart when you want to calm down and get to sleep.

As for the seasonal cold, avoid honey, which might make things even worse as it is highly dehydrating and irritates nerves even more. Take healthy fats instead. These help to fortify the mucous lining and sooth your nerves. Add a teaspoon in your turmeric latte or chai.

Vitamin C is super important in this season and it comes in abundance in our seasonal foods. However, an additional dose would be great. Ayurvedic remedy for that is chyawanprash that is made out of Indian Gooseberry, one of the most vitamin C containing fruits you can find. Mix in in hot milk and add a bit of ghee or coconut oil to sooth the nerves, activate digestion and improve your immunity.

Another favourite of mind is Golden Milk, especially this one by Wudner Workshop. Choose the milk of your choice, add fat and sooth the soul.

In short, to pacify rising seasonal anxiety and any other conditions caused by drying, cold and light qualities of the autumn, make sure you stay warm, eat warm comforting foods and drink warm spicy drinks with milk of your choice.

Stay safe and enjoy the new season!

It feels like on yesterday are just enjoying our last summer days in Kensal; a heavy damp heat which, for certain, is over now and we’re heading towards the cold, ethereal winds of the autumn.

The weather expresses change but, in my ayurvedic opinion, the more interesting side of the seasonal change manifests in the bodymind. What exactly are these signs become clear by being mindful of the messages we get from within in the form of cravings and aversions.

We had a long and rather cold summer but our cravings were still often marked by yearnings for cool and it showed in our choices for the drinks, the food and the side of the street we walked on. Aversion to heat is marked by less clothing, preference for cooling drinks, ice cream and ventilation. Cooling bodies express less appetite and summer salads were enough to satisfy our needs for nourishment. Now, when heat will soon succumbed to cold, I personally find myself craving for warm comforts and naturally feeling aversion towards anything cold and light. The heating is on, woolly socks feel heavenly and I’ve begun eating pretty heavy pasta for lunch as carbs are on! Breakfast with a nice slice of toasted sourdough with plenty of ghee and jam on top feels extremely satisfying. As my occasional guilty pleasure of the season, I have some roasted salted nuts and seeds with a small glass of organic red wine.

I respect my cravings and aversions because I know they respond to the metabolic needs of the season. Now is the time for me to nourish and create a bit of storage for the winter. Most importantly, I won’t feel guilty but do it with gusto. Never, however, do I compromise on timing the meals right (two to three meals a day, emphasis on lunch and little meal in the evening). Equally important is to avoid overeating, fast eating and snacks. Drinking plenty of water and taking a fair amount of healthy fats is essential in autumn. (Try a teaspoonful of organic ghee in your morning coffee or tea. Mix in a blender to create a smooth coffeehouse foam. Yummy!)

SIGNALS FOR CHANGE

Cravings and aversions are the bodymind’s way of signalling we need to make a behavioural change. The intelligence of our organism is highly sophisticated. The adjustments we need to make within changing environment are wired in our genes. This is called self-regulation, which is a process the cells undergo within the framework of birth, death, repair and regeneration. It’s our capacity to renew after wear and tear or disease. It happens without our awareness and without much choice if it happens or not. We are built to last and in addition to unconscious self-regulation our bodymind makes us behave in a way to create conditions for comfort.

When self-regulation is not possible within the means provided the body itself, we start craving things. Cravings direct us towards conscious (and often unconscious) actions that help the body to come back to balance such as adding clothes on or turning on the heater. Running late to the corner shop for a bag of crisps is guided by an innate need to get something lacking either from the body or the mind which is either comfort or need to pacify the nerves. Salt is important in helping the nerve impulse to travel. People with cramps and anxiety often binge on crisps and other processed highly salted foods in order to balance body’s chemistry and need for comfort.

AUTUMN CRAVINGS

Salt cravings are typical of this period of autumn and coming winter but so are sweet ones. Sweet cravings usually manifest because of the need of nourishment but also for calming and grounding purposes. Both sweet and savoury tastes pacify our nerves and create a feeling of satisfaction. In autumn the appetite increases because we need to provide more nourishment to cope in winter and keep nervous system grounded as the climatic conditions irritate nerves. Cold and wind make us shake and they also dry our skin. In response to the toughening weather, the body is keen on putting weight and keeping our mucous levels high increasing the cravings for heavy hearty meals…and snacks, and bread, and chocolate and bread and salted nuts and red wine and chocolate and sweets and chocolate… The important thing is not to get carried away. We need to accept that our cravings are directing our body to do what it needs to do in order to stay balanced and comfortable.

In order for the bodymind to feel comfortable, cravings can be anything, not necessarily healthy. Healthy or unhealthy, we are always on the lookout for safety and comfort. This need might lead us to eat and do things that are not conducive to health for example binge eating or drug abuse. They can give almost instant relief, but the catch is that the comfort they provide is not long-lasting. The craving comes back soon and the relief provided was only symptomatic. Once in a while comfort eating is ok, and an extra glass of wine is fine. On a long run, however, they have a habit of only making things worse. The point is to show that any craving or aversion, for that matter, is an attempt of the bodymind to make us do something and behave so that we feel comfortable.

MINDFUL CHOICES TO PACIFY CRAVINGS

We need to be attentive to these feelings and respect their call. Whether good or bad they are signs that we need to make a change. We can choose to do symptomatic relief by binging on biscuits but after all they rarely save the day. Instead, they make us feel guilty, leaving us without satisfaction. What our choices are, what we choose to do or eat in order to pacify a craving, is the measure of our level of awareness of what is good for us and what is not.

AVERSIONS

Aversions work the opposite way as cravings. Theoretically, we should not do or eat anything we don’t like. By and large there is a specific reason why we dislike something (if we are healthy and in a sound state of mind). Aversion creates tension and when tense we are not able to process foods or create healthy movement. Therefore, if you don’t like running, you shouldn’t do it. Instead, choose a type of exercise that during performance creates satisfaction. As for food, when eating something that doesn’t appeal to us creates problems in the digestive process such as too little saliva, the premise for proper carbohydrate digestion. Salivation is promoted by appetite and when there is little or none, there is no good digestion.

Each season brings along its typical aversions. Many feel like cutting down on chilli and coffee at this time of the year because these items irritate nerves and increase instability and anxiety. Cold drinks and cold salads, typical cravings of summer season, also might create feelings of aversion in winter for their inherent cold properties.

VATA IS HIGH

In ayurvedic terms, vata energy increases in autumn. It is especially high in the junction of the seasons. The mostly felt quality of vata is irregularity, which we can see in how the weather changes from moment to moment and how our bodies show signs of distinct changes in mood and function. Now is the time to be diligent with our routines, keep our body clocks tuned with well-timed daily activities. We should get proper nourishment, add more fats and proteins in our diets and make sure we don’t faff about like headless chickens. We need to get grounded and calm down, keep that vata energy moving smoothly and safely so that we are warm, calm and… as if by magic, get creative.

CREATIVITY IS HIGH

Dryness, lightness, cold and irregularity are qualities that irritate nerves if we are exposed to too much of them. These qualities, however, in small portions, stimulate nerves and thus serve as promoters of creativity, the best expression of vata dosha. Autumn is the time to stay cosy at home and start writing that book, drawing or painting whilst sipping a cup of warm tea like fennel, cinnamon, liquorice or cardamom, letting the mind to fly safely in the confines of our infinite creative space (yes, I love an oxymoron).

PREDICTABILITY OF CRAVINGS

Ayurveda is very mindful about what we crave and what we dislike. When we are healthy, these feelings are cues we can almost predict within the framework of days and seasons. Autumn makes us crave things that might be distasteful in spring. In summer we crave cooling things that are distasteful and uncomfortable in winter. Cravings and aversions are tightly knitted in the patterns of seasons especially as regards food cravings. When you notice you just can’t get enough of something, such as chilli in spring, check if it is your body’s message to do seasonal balancing.

The so-called unhealthy cravings are those that are not in alignment with seasonal or daily rhythms. They might have arisen simply from a habit learned in the past or created because of an overwhelming need to get comfortable and soon. The trick is not to repeat symptomatic relief but start checking, once comfortable what is causing the craving. Sometimes you might need professional help, such as coming to see me in our clinic for a consultation. We can check where cravings and aversions arise from and create a diet and lifestyle that prevent the bad ones from arising and, instead, recognising and respecting the good ones. When a craving is appropriate there’s nothing to prevent you from appeasing it with the means provided by Mother Nature.

Stay healthy!

Anu

How to Live in the Now (For Real)

We all know the best way to spend our days is to be in the now. But how do you actually stay there? How do you stop worrying about the future or ruminating on the past, reliably, not just on a good day?

The key is focus. Most of us were told to focus growing up, but very few were taught how. Focus isn’t a personality trait; it’s a skill. And it’s the doorway to presence.

What does focusing really mean?

Focus is moving from one action to the next with awareness.

It’s the opposite of random, reflexive behaviour. Distraction happens when we slide into activities we didn’t consciously choose, checking our phone for the tenth time, driving on autopilot, eating without tasting.

When you begin to choose your next action, you take hold of the present. You won’t hold it perfectly (no one does) but you can keep bringing your attention back, again and again, to the thing you’re actually doing.

What happens in the now?

In the present moment, thoughts soften and feelings become clearer and here’s the heart of it.

Ask yourself, “How do I feel?” Your mind returns to now instantly, because feeling only lives in the present. Ayurvedic living trains this kind of moment-to-moment inquiry: How am I? Is this comfortable? If yes, continue. If no, do something opposite to restore balance.

Feeling anxious or fearful? Seek warmth and reassurance: a hug, kind words, steady breath.

Feeling heavy or sluggish? Move your body: a brisk walk to invite lightness.

Skin dry and tight? Moisturise: simple care, immediate relief.

Our environment constantly feeds us qualities: hot/cold, heavy/light, dry/moist that become felt states. The most basic response to any stimulus is “I like it / I don’t like it.” When we like, the body eases. When we don’t, the body tenses in preparation. Life is a dance between ease and tension, moment by moment.

Ayurvedic life aims for a steady baseline of ease and the capacity to keep our cool when tension arises. Focus, and the habit of returning to the present, gives us perspective. It keeps the past and future from distorting what’s actually here, so small triggers don’t become big reactions.

Learning to focus (the practical way)

This is a trainable skill. In our Friday morning meditation classes, I teach a simple, portable technique that helps you return to the now anytime, anywhere. It’s not about forcing silence; it’s about giving the mind a clear, gentle anchor, so presence becomes your default more often.

When: Fridays, morning session

Cost: £10 (chai & porridge included)

Where/How: Check the button below

Keep exploring

If this speaks to you, consider deepening your journey with our Jivita Academy programmes, whether for personal development or professional qualification in Ayurvedic education. You can also find talks and practices on our YouTube channel, or book a time to talk with me directly.

Being in the now isn’t a mystery.

It’s a rhythm you learn, a focus you practise, and a kindness you offer yourself, one conscious action at a time.

The smart ones live by expending the least amount of energy in living well and being healthy. That’s how nature works: with the law of least effort. Forget no pain no gain! There is a way to use less amount of effort and gather more strength and energy.

This tagline is also based on experience I’ve gathered over my years of practice with my students, clients and those on health coaching journeys. Having observed and practiced on myself, too, I can with confidence say that there is no cleverer or smarter way to live than by the diet and lifestyle designed by Mother Nature. It is the most successful way humans have ever lived, until very recently.

The smartest diet and lifestyle are based on following seasonal rhythms and on being timely with our activities. We have genetically defined biorhythms that have developed from the start of organic life to be in sync with the dark and light cycle and the changing of seasons. The smartest way to heal is to recognise non rhythmic behaviours and return to the natural patterns.

Once we get back to following nature’s rhythms we can expect a longer life, a healthy old age and death without pain. That sounds like the right way to go and we need to be smart about it.

Here’s what ayurvedic living can provide

Fastest, easiest and cheapest way to heal and prevent disease

Diet provides exactly the nutrients we need in any specific time and place

Food becomes medicine

Stops us from counting calories and reading nutritional labels

Allows us to eat to satisfaction, every time

Helps to understand the power of healthy fasting

Keeps the skin glowing

No more gas and bloating

What goes in also comes out in a healthy and satisfying form

Enhances memory, focus and sense of contentment

Helps the body, the most skilled doctor you’ll ever meet, to do its own healing

Sets the brain and the body for a day of creative and productive activity

You get the power to understand your imbalances and to correct them

No one can tell you anymore “there’s nothing wrong with you”

Easy to do anywhere, anytime and by anyone

Excellently paired up with Western Medicine

Environmentally best diet and sustainable lifestyle

Everything becomes relative. There is no good or bad, all depends on the context of use and experience

Builds up confidence in self

Lifts life experience to a higher level

Makes life meaningful, eventually showing you your purpose

Daily practice of Ayurveda can bring these results on relatively quickly, depending on commitment to daily and seasonal routines. Our bodyminds are wired to return to wellbeing and they will when we observe timing and seasonality and manage our stress levels. When we create conditions by removing the barriers and stressors out of the way, there’s no reason why we would not feel well or heal from disease. Or, at least manage an incurable condition better.

Ayurvedic living is a practice of right timing. It requires following routines every day and along the seasons. Once timely activities have become part of our unconscious awareness (like driving a car) the focus on productivity and creativity increase.

The routines become second us very quickly. This is because they are natural to us and the bodymind is still, under the bonnet trying always to get back to what is natural to it. Given the chance the return to normal biorhythms is fast. Getting direct experiences of the health benefits of the right rhythms increases motivation exponentially. Living with nature’s laws makes life effortless where correct diet and lifestyle choices become easy to execute.

Ayurvedic life requires commitment. Commitment to the cause of becoming the best you. Commitment is dependent on motivation. Motivation, as we know, fluctuates from moment to moment. This is one of the reasons to join our retreat in Dorset. In a residential environment when routines are observed to perfection, lack of motivation is not an obstacle anymore. Procrastination is left behind and results are achieved quicker.

Each of my clients have left the retreat with more than they had expected. When barriers from healing are removed, in other word stress in all its expressions, healing which is set in our genes, can start. When feelings of safety and comfort are achieved by right routines, daily massage therapies, yoga, breath work, meditation, herbal medicine, nature around us and beautiful tasty food, there’s no reason why the body should not return to being what it is entitled to feel: well and healthy. It does it with vigorous energy and exhorts its power to anything that needs fixing. I am the orchestrator but in the end I am merely watching from the sides and admire my clients healing themselves.

With ayurveda the bodymind gains intelligence of repairing whatever is broken. There is a powerful force that wants every cell in the body to thrive. Once given the chance to fix the process of coming back to balance can start.

By being smart the way nature intended, we can achieve wellbeing that goes beyond “being happy”. Nature does not intend us to be happy. Being smart means becoming part of the evolutionary drive and being content with a meaningful life. Happiness is a momentary feeling that is part of it. Nature drives us to be flexible and adaptable, to have bouncebackability, understand the value of struggles and ability to allow sadness as part of our lives.

Ayurveda is the smartest way to live because it will help us to harness the most natural, practical and easiest way to manage our diet and lifestyle. Nature works with the law of the least effort. You might think Ayurveda is a major effort but, when you ride the patterns of rhythmic living, you’ll start living the easiest life and in fact, the smartest.

Fasting

You can’t heal your bloating or any other digestive problem by eating more. Some of you might say it does help regurgitation and yes, for a moment but it does not resolve the problem. For acidity, you need to fast because the acid is caused mainly by fermentation of food that stays too long in your gut.

Your gut can only heal and improve its functionality if it is empty for at least 4 hours between meals and especially, fast in the evenings. Morning fasts are just damage control for the load of food that has been eaten late. If you want to heal and control weigh, evening should be your fasting focus.

Hot water

Whilst fasting, you can take sips of hot water once every 10 minutes. Hot water helps the food to move down as it relaxes gut walls. It also stimulates digestive enzyme activity and removes excess mucous. It calms down the nerves lining the gut wall thus reducing chances of cramps and spasms.

Crush the seeds from inside the pod between your teeth to a fine powder and sip hot water on top.

Resolving digestive problems is not very difficult, however, the solutions usually require you to make behavioural changes.
Let’s talk about fasting since ‘tis the time!

Many indigenous cultures described February, the late winter moon cycle, the toughest month of the year in terms of food supply, as Hunger Moon.

Very little grows in nature right. Millions of years of foraging life on Earth in cyclic seasonal harvest rotation has made our genes adapt so that we can withstand hunger better at this time. On one condition…

The survival game during scarcity was dependent on the extra fat added before and during winter. Abundant late summer and autumn harvests provided extra sugar, that could be converted to fat for storage. Traditionally, oversupply was (and still is often) turned into preserves, dried and cured goods and storage ready items for winter

At some point, the storages started running low and what was left was roots and bark to chew, perfect antidotes to scrape off excess created during winter. The excess provided sustenance during the meagre months.

The “winter coat” would support us but it also could be too much. By too much excess I mean extra pounds, water retention, high cholesterol, mucous, congested lymph, congested liver and high levels of sugar in blood. These problems are a natural consequence of winter diet. However, in healthy people who follow seasonal diet they usually are, during this season, still at safe levels and not actual health issues. They do have a high potential of becoming problematic especially if fasting period is not observed.

Origin of ritual fasting

Imagine the olden times, when hunger was a reality of every-day life during late winter, people would get together with their family and friends to hold space for each other. Maybe sing a song, comfort the weak and make sure your nearest and dearest survive until growth starts again. It is easy to think that a ceremony of some sort starts repeating every year and it becomes a annual ritual. Hunger moon is a time when the mind is put to test. Ability to manage hunger requires strength of character. Having a tribe around you to share the hardship made late winter struggles somewhat easier.

When religions were born, these spiritual ceremonies and rituals were already in place. When dogma set in, it had a framework to settle in.

Fasting in a time of abundance

Enough of history. The point is, fasting has always been on our late winter to do list. In fact, Mother Nature has created conditions for the fast to happen naturally by not offering much to eat at all. What grows now? Nearly nothing but hey, supermarkets are full of food.

Today, it is difficult to fast as we have abundance year around. The challenge to fast now is even more arduous as we have the food and we have to deny it. Foraging is easy, you only have to press a button and a ready-made meal is right at your door.

Proper fasting

Fasting has to be done within reason. Obviously, the starting point is to check you have no eating disorders.

The ability to fast is dependent on the stamina of your fasting muscle. Consider it as any other muscle: it gets stronger with exercise. Working out with this muscle is as any other challenge. You set your mind to it, do more of it and do it better, every time.

If you have never fasted, and/or have fear of hunger and you tend to eat abundantly, the worse favour you can do to yourself is a juice fast. The bodymind has to get used to fasting gradually so that it won’t go into tilt. Surprises are not highly regarded by the bodymind and can trigger a stress response which means unstable moods, inability to focus and insomnia to start with. Sudden abstinence of food will make the brain think there is scarcity of supplies so it will hold on to fat at any cost. And, and and! It will turn on the worst carb cravings ever.

Small intermittent fasting (SIF)

The most reasonable fast is a small intermittent fast where fasting and feeding windows are measured by the size of the fasting muscle.

One of the most reasonable SI,F able to give fast results means leaving 4 hours between meals, no snacking and no eating after 5pm. Next meal is breakfast around 8-9am. You can still eat three meals a day but keep the window of fasting longer and make sure your stomach is empty when you go to bed.

If you are thinking of SIF for losing the “winter coat” and to detoxify, evening fasting is essential. Morning fasting is definitely needed if you need to eat in the evening, but it does not have the same power to promote weight loss, healing and rejuvenation as evening fasting.

You can eat anything you like from the seasonal, organic and local offer. You don’t have to cut your favourite items (except all whites: cold milk products, sugar, flour and salt, think processed foods). You can still have healthy fats, honey and raw sugar to sweeten, starch at lunch and even a glass of red wine.

Also, fasting during lunch does not work at all. It makes you crave food like mad in the evening and without control. Anything goes at large quantities.

If your fasting muscle is getting stronger, you can try two meals a day: breakfast and lunch. Or, brunch and late lunch. No solids after.

Get used to the SIF with two meals and you can start thinking of two liquid meals and one solid: breakfast juice, lunch with carbs and supper a soup or even better, bone broth. This savoury juice is one of the healing miracle ingredients with ability to keep hunger way and repair a damaged and inflamed gut lining.

If you find yourself pacing around the fridge, you can already consider the fast you’re on is too much for you.

Greens, greens and more greens

Another thing you’d need to do is start adding loads and loads of greens to our diet. Ideally, if you are still in your three meal a day phase, I’d recommend you to take a nice plate of cooked greens as your supper. I like to cook kale and sprinkle a bit of toasted walnuts and feta cheese on top. I also cannot resist slightly charred broccoli tops with chilli and garlic. If you like to take a slice of meat or fish in the evening (before 5-6pm), have spinach or broccoli only with it and avoid carbs of starchy kind.

Tolerance of hunger

Fasting should be relatively easy but it might create some unease with the initial adjustment to new gut rhythms. As regards hunger, remember this mantra:

Hunger is not pain. Hunger comes in waves. Hunger is a sign of healthy agni.

Hunger is like tiredness. It comes and goes and we can manage to carry out our lives for a period of time with this sensation. People have grown, however, scared of hunger, as if it was something that would kill us. Hunger does not kill us. Malnutrition and undernutrition do, but if you are a relatively normal person, you won’t die in four hours of fasting. And, if you cannot stay four hours without food, then you need to fix that.

You can turn things around and think about the positives of hunger. Hunger makes you feel light, hunger means the body is eating its waste, debris, metabolic waste and dead and mutated cells. And all this happens during the night, whilst you sleep. You just need to be a bit patient in the evening and, repeat your mantra. Drink warm to hot water when you get the feeling and turn it to a positive achievement. When you go to bed, place a hot water bottle on your abdomen to mimic the heaviness and warmth an evening meal would provide.

Once you control your hunger, you can do anything.

How to get started

Establishing a right kind of fasting and feasting routine can be a challenge. Come and see me for a consultation and we can find the best way to establish a healthy fasting routine. However, the best way to do it would be to join my retreat in Dorset where you are guided through the routines put in practice daily, under my surveillance, so that you understand and learn the benefits by your own experience. Our retreat programs are designed so that you feel satisfied by your food longer and remove cravings of snacks. You will soon notice how easy it is to follow and how wonderful it is to join the table and eat with proper appetite caused by a healthily empty stomach.

We eat a light breakfast, a good substantial lunch, and supper if needed. This coming March retreat we will take advantage of body’s own need to cleanse tissue and purify blood. Helping the bodymind do its duty is a highly satisfying experience as weight, congestion and toxins come out with ease and results are easily visible from day after day.

GUNAS

In Ayurveda we seek balance and this balance works by the law of opposites based on how foods like for example mushrooms feel like. Ayurvedically observed mushrooms are inherently heavy, warming and grounding, helps us to rest and sleep. By this logic of polarities, they are appropriate in a moment when we feel light, dry and cold. Just like when you feel cold you get better by warm comforts. The law of opposites is set in physics.

Each food item and activity can be qualified. There is no such thing that cannot be qualified. Try thinking about something, anything in the world, and you can immediately give qualifying words to it. Adjectives are imbued into everything.

Qualities can be set in opposite pairs. Hot – cold, heavy – light, dry – moist. Put this principle in practice and you find it’s something you do all the time. When your skin is dry you moisturise, when you feel hot you cool down. If you eat drying foods, such as asparagus (it makes you pee) you’ll reduce excess liquidity, puffiness in other words.

The qualities and the polarity theory mean that everything can be potentially used as medicine, mushrooms and all other “banned” vegetables included. We need their qualities to be in direct opposition to the feelings in us that need balancing,

The defining factor are the qualities present, the ones we feel in the moment.

We have the context to think because…

Everything can be equally toxic. If you feel heavy and sleepy already and need to stay awake, mushrooms not the best remedy food for you.

SEASONS

Now, let’s consider the seasons. Each season feels different. Winter is cold and light, spring is heavy and moist, summer is hot and light. If you have heavy mushrooms in spring, when they are not in season, you might create a health issue.

Autumn and winter increase feelings of lightness, cold and dry. As if by magic, mushrooms grow mostly in late summer and autumn and can be easily preserved for winter by drying them. They are perfect sustenance in the period of scarcity (lightness). They also increase immunity and stamina, well needed in winter.

Nature is very clever. What grows in each season is appropriate to balance seasonal imbalances and disorders. What grows in summer is juicy and sweet to balance the effects of heat. Spring foods are light and detoxifying to balance the heavy wet climate. Winter brings dryness and lightness and hearty winter foods are the best remedy. Creamy mushroom pasta is a perfect ayurvedic lunch in winter.

ENERGETICS

Mushrooms, and all other food items, can be described with qualities. There is, however, another dimension of food, in addition to the qualitative approach, namely the food energetics. By understanding the energetics, we can arrive to the conclusion that mushrooms, and any other food item for that matter, can be enjoyed as healthy food.

Food energetics refer to food items’ ability to stimulate or calm the bodymind. Chilli and coffee are stimulants. Mushrooms are the opposite. They calm and ground. The stimulating energy is called rajasic whilst the calming and grounding one is called tamasic. We need both these energies to carry out our lives. Rajas equals action, tamas equals inaction.

When an organism performs activities and rest in harmony it is said to be in a sattvic state, the third dimension of the energetics. Sattva is a given, inherent quality to all plants and animals, except humans.

The sattvic aspect of plants is a result of them following the cyclic life of nature and doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing. They live their dharma 100%. They cannot choose to stop growing or procreating. They cannot decide to go for a walk, a behaviour untypical to them. Humans can stop moving, lie on a couch and watch tv with a bucket of ice cream, all day long. We have the choice and our choices are often not so sattvic.

Sattva is a positive energetic stamp on rajasic and tamasic foods. It is found in fresh, organic, local and seasonal foods that have grown mature in their natural habitat, are eaten fresh, are organic and seasonal. When these elements are gone food is less healthy and energetically negative. It can irritate or suppress the mind. Processed foods are the worst of them.

Sattva is not a separate state on its own. The balance is in the activity or in the rest. If your life is in balance, you feel like its flowing. If there’s no flow, you struggle or feel like things are not moving to the right direction. You might be in bed but can’t fall asleep or have a terrible nightmare whilst sleeping and wake up exhausted. Flow and restoration are the effects of sattva affecting action and inaction

Still, there is a whole Mediterranean area that feed on tomatoes almost daily and still they are considered to be enjoying the healthiest of diets in the world. There should all be dead by now!

Tomato belongs to the nightshade family with aubergines peppers and potatoes. They come in season in summer and can be kept or preserved for the winter. Most interestingly, the nightshades are mainly eaten cooked. Cooking eases digestibility of these vegetables (fruits actually). Cooking and seasoning makes them easier to digest. Raw tomatoes are a struggle to digest and should be avoided by those who have a weak digestive power which makes me enter the third point in my quest to justify the inclusion of the banned fruits and vegetables in our ayurvedic diet.

DIGESTIVE POWER – AGNI

Digestibility defines the nutritional value of your food. Digestibility is hugely improved by cooking food, especially of potato and aubergine. Who would eat them raw anyway? Tomatoes can be eaten raw. However, cooking them releases lycopene, one of the most powerful antioxidants found so far.

There’s no denying, nightshades are more difficult to digest, especially if you eat them raw. By cooking them you get delicious dishes with easy digestibility. Imagine, dishes consisting only of nightshades like Greek moussaka should be banned? Not from my diet, thanks.

To conclude, food choices need to be appropriate for the context, timing and obviously, our own sensitivities. Without absolute no-nos, everything that is freshly prepared and cooked and eaten with respect, that is seasonal, organic and local has a potential of enhancing balance in you by its sattvicity. Understanding the variables at play you can certainly enjoy foods that might pose a challenge otherwise.

The title of this article is a bit provocative but not far from truth. The truth is in the nature. When we eat and do things that are natural to us then within those limits we can find that every food has value when it is eaten with respect and placed and timed right.

Viva la mushroom!

Drink your food, eat your water

What kind of advice is that? That does not sound right! But it is and I will explain why and how.

I heard this statement for the first time from one of my biggest influencers, Dr Vasant Lad, who’s life work consist of translating and diffusing ayurvedic knowledge to the westerners, is at least one of the sources of this statement. Today I read a similar statement in a Finnish science magazine which prompted me to write this article.

“Drink your food” is a more graphic way to express the general advice we ayurvedic folks preach day in day out: Eat slowly. Chew well. You should process your mouthfuls so well in your mouth that they become completely liquid. Only then they are ready for the transit down to the lower parts of your digestive tract. That’s where the digestion continues out of your awareness until it asks for permission to come out form the part where the sun rarely shines.

Chewing is the most important part of digestion. Fail it and you pay the price by becoming aware of your digestion. If you bypass chewing by drinking food down, eating too fast, too much and in wrong combos, we can expect any or many of the following: gas, bloating, heaviness, acidity, diarrhoea, constipation, colic pain and inflammation of the gut (shown usually by skin rash).

Drink your food. Make sure the liquefying effect comes from saliva and not from water, wine or a sugary soda. Saliva is mostly water, so you need to have enough liquids in your body to be able to salivate. Sipping preferably hot water throughout the day, most of it before lunch is the best way to do it.

Drinking your food is quite self-explanatory but what about eating your liquids? How do you eat liquids? There are two ways to do it. First of all, you should have lots of food items that contain water, that well-known group of food items called vegetables, and fruits of course. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain something called structured water, which is electrically charged. In Ayurveda we call this kind of charge pranic. Preparing food from fresh ingredients gives you lots of water. Carrots have 90% water in them. Even ham, which is not fresh when you eat it has 70% water in it. The point is, you can be any type of eater, as long as you eat natural foods. Crisps have nearly no water. Avoid them, and other processed foods as much as you can.

Another way to eat your liquids is to drink by sipping. There is a general tendency between my clients to drink a lot at one go. I wake up and drink a half a pint of cold water is what they consider a healthy habit. It’s not. It’s one of the worst ways to start the day. Cold water constricts the gut and increases mucous. Large amounts, like a pint, flush important digestive enzymes away that are already weak in the morning. Sipping a small cup of hot water will do the trick of scraping mucous, relaxing the gut and enhancing enzyme function as they thrive in heat.

If you have cold water or anything cold, take a small dose in your mouth and don’t gulp it down immediately. Warm it up a bit at least so the stomach won’t have to take a hit of cold shower, which only makes it squirm like most of us would likely do when jumping under one.

What stands out from this wise piece of advice is that it all comes down to understanding that how you eat is more important that what you eat. Whatever the food item, healthy or unhealthy, can change dramatically in its nutritional profile by how it is eaten.

Learning how to eat takes only remembering one sentence and I hope you will cherish it.

Hunger…

is not pain

it comes in waves

is a sign of increasing digestive power, or agni

One of the biggest achievements in my life, as a survivor of bulimia, has been to become comfortable with a feeling of hunger. Having spent my early adulthood surrounded by a media that promotes constant snacking to avoid hunger, overcoming the conditioning was a big challenge.

For every positive turn in my life Yoga and Ayurveda have given me the tools to recognise and resolve issues that I did not even think were an issue, like the avoidance of hunger. Yoga gave me the power of self-reflection and Ayurveda empowered me with the solutions.

In Ayurveda the most important marker of your health is a functional digestive power and one of the first questions to assess that is to ask “do you feel hungry?”. At first, I was a bit confused because it went against the current doctrine of avoidance.

To turn my mind into appreciating hunger as a sign of good digestive health was not as much of a challenge as actually executing it in my body, letting myself feel hunger and be comfortable with it. My way out of the conditioning started by recognising that I cannot expect change by always focusing on the same thing, trying to deny that I’m hungry. Instead, I changed my thinking about it. I created positive mantras that have worked so well that I now consider myself totally healed from my past paranoias and obsessions about food.

Hunger is not Pain

The first thing to understand is that the feeling of hunger is not pain. Hunger is like being tired. It’s a sensation that can be managed. You can resist a couple of hours and then after sleep feels even sweeter, like food. You can function whilst tired and so can you whilst hungry.

Hunger Comes in Waves

Secondly, hunger comes in waves and can be managed with intake of warm water and distraction. If and when feelings of hunger come to me between meals, I remind myself how I love feeling light in my body and I start enjoying the sensation.

Hunger is a sign of Healthy Agni

Safely extended period of hunger (e.g. 4 hours between meals during the day) are not dangerous and these breaks are the key of making sure digestive power is strong when we eat. This practice also allows us to eat with gusto almost anything. Strong digestion and empty gut are able to digest even less healthy foods as long as you don’t overeat or eat too fast.

Hunger management should start considering the strength of the fasting muscle. This invisible muscle is like any other muscle. It grows in stamina by exercise. Resilience increases over time and the fasting periods should gradually increase to 4-6 hours and even more if needed. Sustained long fasting period with a small fasting muscle can be seriously harmful and are not promoted in Ayurveda.

A safe way to start flexing your fasting muscle and get away from snacking is to wait 10-15 minutes before eating anything. When then hunger strikes, wait for that moment and then eat. You will not die nor faint. Consider that moment as an opportunity also to train your mind to be your servant rather than a master.

Also, a great substitute to snacks it cardamom pods. Bite the seeds out from the pod, grind them between your teeth and sip hot water on top. Keep them always available in your pocket or in your bag, next to your computer or workstation. Every time you feel like grabbing something, have cardamom and hot water. They help you even more to clear the gut and power up the digestive power so that when you eat, you can eat to your heart’s content.
