I have often wondered about how to describe Ayurveda in a clear and concise manner. My current conclusion is that the description depends on how we observe it. So far my best attempt is to say it is a system that promotes healing by self-regulation (the body’s innate intelligence to heal and repair) through autonomic nervous system control.

This autumn I joined a two-year master’s program at UCL for pain management. I am delighted to have found a cutting-edge course that teaches me everything there is to know about this familiar phenomenon, but, I was surprised to realise that there is no consensus between the scientific community about how to define pain. It appears that the description of pain is as difficult as a comprehensive description of Ayurveda.

I started connecting the dots, not for the first time though! I have been a keen enthusiast and observant of autonomic nervous system control in my work for years, particularly from the polyvagal theory perspective. This theory has been the bridge between eastern and western healing modalities and it allows me to confidently explain the healing principles of Ayurveda in Western Scientific terms. The theory has provided robustness in my practice as a consultant, therapist and teacher as it explains how a feeling of safety is the most fundamental element of healing.

The current description of pain by International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has made attempts to describe pain and has managed to create something that by itself feels rather painful. Since 1979 IASP has been trying to complete this task. The current version, from 2023:

“An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage,”

The description is followed by a bulleted list of factors that need to be considered such as:

We feel pain differently and in different intensities in varying contexts of life.

Pain is mostly in our heads. Like colour, the brain receives signal that is transcribed to a sensation and this can be independent of a stimulus. Pain can originate just by thinking about it.

Pain behaviour is learned. There are differences between age, genders and ethnicities. Some are more stoic than others.

There is no way to measure pain. Pain specialists have to trust the word of the patient. It is, in fact, impossible to feel other people’s pain except by empathy and then be moved by compassion. The problem is that compassion is selective and there are inequalities between the above-mentioned categories. Minorities’ (such as black and Asian) pain is often underrated but unfortunately, they are the ones that suffer more and struggle getting proper help.

The danger of pain helps us to behave in an environment in an adaptive way, however, pain and especially fear of pain often limits our interaction with the environment. A potential threat can create hypersensitivity and inability to adapt in the end.

Pain creates a challenge for diagnosis and prescription as peoples’ description of pain vary depending on their stoicism. Factors like catastrophising and emotional intelligence are variables that interfere with pain perception and they also vary through time.

Stress and self-control can vary significantly depending on the contextual safety or threat of an underlying disease, psychological state, social and living environments. Therefore, pain is also described as a biopsychosocial experience where verifiable factors such as disease or genetics (e.g. scoliosis), psychological states such as anxiety and depression, and social interactions can on their own or together amplify or dampen the intensity of pain.

If you are familiar with Ayurvedic practice, we are connecting a lot of dots here through a holistic understanding that everything can be a source for pain: our body and the environment it lives in, the past experiences and future worries included.

Pain is undefinable. It is an energy, a force that drives our behaviour, similarly to the mind. We cannot define the mind but we know it exists. Pain’s existence can be verified by the fact that it creates a feeling and feelings create emotions, a change in physiology.

Ayurveda is fully based on feelings, or better, measuring feelings such as heat or cold. To some point heat is pleasant until it becomes unpleasant like when sunbathing. Cold can equally be pleasant but at some point intensively painful such as brain freeze by ice cream. Ayurvedic healing modalities aim to keep us in the comfort zone between a spectrum of two opposite feelings. Not too dry, not too moist, not too heavy, not too light. Everyone’s preferences change with context and therefore the role of the pain specialist is to educate patients how to navigate life within at least relative comfort.

This blog entry is part of the assignments of my first module. Apart from understanding the different facets of pain I am also delighted to have learned how the NHS is moving towards holistic, integrative, multidisciplinary approach for pain management.

Management is the key word especially as regards chronic pain and Ayurveda has an arsenal of tools to improve quality of life of the sufferers, like me. I live with pain without much suffering.

Based on this and what I’ve learned so far at UCL I am adding a new description for Ayurveda to the list of many: Ayurveda is pain management.

How to Live in the Now (For Real)

We all know the best way to spend our days is to be in the now. But how do you actually stay there? How do you stop worrying about the future or ruminating on the past, reliably, not just on a good day?

The key is focus. Most of us were told to focus growing up, but very few were taught how. Focus isn’t a personality trait; it’s a skill. And it’s the doorway to presence.

What does focusing really mean?

Focus is moving from one action to the next with awareness.

It’s the opposite of random, reflexive behaviour. Distraction happens when we slide into activities we didn’t consciously choose, checking our phone for the tenth time, driving on autopilot, eating without tasting.

When you begin to choose your next action, you take hold of the present. You won’t hold it perfectly (no one does) but you can keep bringing your attention back, again and again, to the thing you’re actually doing.

What happens in the now?

In the present moment, thoughts soften and feelings become clearer and here’s the heart of it.

Ask yourself, “How do I feel?” Your mind returns to now instantly, because feeling only lives in the present. Ayurvedic living trains this kind of moment-to-moment inquiry: How am I? Is this comfortable? If yes, continue. If no, do something opposite to restore balance.

Feeling anxious or fearful? Seek warmth and reassurance: a hug, kind words, steady breath.

Feeling heavy or sluggish? Move your body: a brisk walk to invite lightness.

Skin dry and tight? Moisturise: simple care, immediate relief.

Our environment constantly feeds us qualities: hot/cold, heavy/light, dry/moist that become felt states. The most basic response to any stimulus is “I like it / I don’t like it.” When we like, the body eases. When we don’t, the body tenses in preparation. Life is a dance between ease and tension, moment by moment.

Ayurvedic life aims for a steady baseline of ease and the capacity to keep our cool when tension arises. Focus, and the habit of returning to the present, gives us perspective. It keeps the past and future from distorting what’s actually here, so small triggers don’t become big reactions.

Learning to focus (the practical way)

This is a trainable skill. In our Friday morning meditation classes, I teach a simple, portable technique that helps you return to the now anytime, anywhere. It’s not about forcing silence; it’s about giving the mind a clear, gentle anchor, so presence becomes your default more often.

When: Fridays, morning session

Cost: £10 (chai & porridge included)

Where/How: Check the button below

Keep exploring

If this speaks to you, consider deepening your journey with our Jivita Academy programmes, whether for personal development or professional qualification in Ayurvedic education.
The smart ones live by expending the least amount of energy in living well and being healthy. That’s how nature works: with the law of least effort. Forget no pain no gain! There is a way to use less amount of effort and gather more strength and energy.

This tagline is also based on experience I’ve gathered over my years of practice with my students, clients and those on health coaching journeys. Having observed and practiced on myself, too, I can with confidence say that there is no cleverer or smarter way to live than by the diet and lifestyle designed by Mother Nature. It is the most successful way humans have ever lived, until very recently.

The smartest diet and lifestyle are based on following seasonal rhythms and on being timely with our activities. We have genetically defined biorhythms that have developed from the start of organic life to be in sync with the dark and light cycle and the changing of seasons. The smartest way to heal is to recognise non rhythmic behaviours and return to the natural patterns.

Once we get back to following nature’s rhythms we can expect a longer life, a healthy old age and death without pain. That sounds like the right way to go and we need to be smart about it.

Here’s what ayurvedic living can provide

Fastest, easiest and cheapest way to heal and prevent disease

Diet provides exactly the nutrients we need in any specific time and place

Food becomes medicine

Stops us from counting calories and reading nutritional labels

Allows us to eat to satisfaction, every time

Helps to understand the power of healthy fasting

Keeps the skin glowing

No more gas and bloating

What goes in also comes out in a healthy and satisfying form

Enhances memory, focus and sense of contentment

Helps the body, the most skilled doctor you’ll ever meet, to do its own healing

Sets the brain and the body for a day of creative and productive activity

You get the power to understand your imbalances and to correct them

No one can tell you anymore “there’s nothing wrong with you”

Easy to do anywhere, anytime and by anyone

Excellently paired up with Western Medicine

Environmentally best diet and sustainable lifestyle

Everything becomes relative. There is no good or bad, all depends on the context of use and experience

Builds up confidence in self

Lifts life experience to a higher level

Makes life meaningful, eventually showing you your purpose

Daily practice of Ayurveda can bring these results on relatively quickly, depending on commitment to daily and seasonal routines. Our bodyminds are wired to return to wellbeing and they will when we observe timing and seasonality and manage our stress levels. When we create conditions by removing the barriers and stressors out of the way, there’s no reason why we would not feel well or heal from disease. Or, at least manage an incurable condition better.

Ayurvedic living is a practice of right timing. It requires following routines every day and along the seasons. Once timely activities have become part of our unconscious awareness (like driving a car) the focus on productivity and creativity increase.

The routines become second us very quickly. This is because they are natural to us and the bodymind is still, under the bonnet trying always to get back to what is natural to it. Given the chance the return to normal biorhythms is fast. Getting direct experiences of the health benefits of the right rhythms increases motivation exponentially. Living with nature’s laws makes life effortless where correct diet and lifestyle choices become easy to execute.

Ayurvedic life requires commitment. Commitment to the cause of becoming the best you. Commitment is dependent on motivation. Motivation, as we know, fluctuates from moment to moment. This is one of the reasons to join our retreat in Dorset. In a residential environment when routines are observed to perfection, lack of motivation is not an obstacle anymore. Procrastination is left behind and results are achieved quicker.

Each of my clients have left the retreat with more than they had expected. When barriers from healing are removed, in other word stress in all its expressions, healing which is set in our genes, can start. When feelings of safety and comfort are achieved by right routines, daily massage therapies, yoga, breath work, meditation, herbal medicine, nature around us and beautiful tasty food, there’s no reason why the body should not return to being what it is entitled to feel: well and healthy. It does it with vigorous energy and exhorts its power to anything that needs fixing. I am the orchestrator but in the end I am merely watching from the sides and admire my clients healing themselves.

With ayurveda the bodymind gains intelligence of repairing whatever is broken. There is a powerful force that wants every cell in the body to thrive. Once given the chance to fix the process of coming back to balance can start.

By being smart the way nature intended, we can achieve wellbeing that goes beyond “being happy”. Nature does not intend us to be happy. Being smart means becoming part of the evolutionary drive and being content with a meaningful life. Happiness is a momentary feeling that is part of it. Nature drives us to be flexible and adaptable, to have bouncebackability, understand the value of struggles and ability to allow sadness as part of our lives.

Ayurveda is the smartest way to live because it will help us to harness the most natural, practical and easiest way to manage our diet and lifestyle. Nature works with the law of the least effort. You might think Ayurveda is a major effort but, when you ride the patterns of rhythmic living, you’ll start living the easiest life and in fact, the smartest.

Don’t worry, don’t hurry, take it easy. That’s already one good formula for an Ayurvedic holiday. Ayurveda focuses on keeping good digestion going and nothing helps gut function better than relaxing. Many tend to relax around a glass of cocktail under the sun. (That’s what I’ve been doing daily for the last week. Yum and Yikes!)

The reality is, though, that a change of environment is going to put the bodymind out of balance. By default, especially if you travel fast to a country with differences in culture, temperature, season, diet, meal timings and microbial exposure your gut is the first to feel it. Even for the most zen like folks, the sum total of these factors can cause constipation or diarrhoea, not to mention gas and bloating. Yeah, the usual unwanted. The imodiums and laxatives are packed in the suitcases of many a traveller.

In addition to the potential gut dysfunction by bad eating habits, there’s the inflammatory effect of alcohol. Beer, wine and spirits can help to relax but only in small doses and taken with food. There’s no denying alcohol can be a good digestive but larger doses are indeed, pretty bad for digestion.

Then, there’s your skin to think about. If you’re travelling to a sunnier and warmer place and intend to sunbathe after a year closed inside four walls between home and office, you better be ready for some serious sun stress. Alcohol makes this problem even worse. Whilst you’re trying not to burn, alcohol might already have inflamed the skin.

The reason I’m writing this article is because there’s plenty you can do before you hit the unwelcome digestive distress. You might be able to enjoy a holiday under the sun without burning the skin, digesting better and having moods that help you to relax.

Before you leave, start preparing your skin for the sun with an added dose of chlorophyll, in other words greens. Eat lots of greens, and take green powdered supplements such as chlorella already a week before you leave. Chlorophyl helps the skin to adapt to an increased amount of sun. It might not be helpful on its own and you need added protection but it will create more resilience towards exposure. Greens help you to alkalise and holidays tend to acidify the body. Take tablets aor 1 tsp of chlorella or wheat grass powder am & pm

During the holiday, eat greens (yes, as much as you can) and take an added does of green powders such as chlorella, morning and evening. It helps you to digest alcohol, an added support for your liver. Greens are always in season and have a fantastic range of health promoting features. Green salads are especially good as a dinner option, which takes me to the next point:

Avoid heavy carbs, especially in the evening. Pizza, pasta, noodles and heavy starches are good at lunch. Go keto by night with salads and proteins

Keep cardamom pods in your pocket. They are an excellent help for gas and bloating. Easy to carry and easy to chew

Sip hot water when you can, especially in the morning. Make sure you have at least 800ml before lunch, otherwise you might have an unquenchable thirst in the afternoon whilst digesting

Massage your abdomen before you get out of bed, circular movements clockwise for 2 mins followed by seeping movements from sternum to pubic bone

Avoid coffee on an empty stomach, have hot water and lemon first when you get up

Avoid alcohol on an empty stomach, have nuts around if you’re in a bar. Fibre is important for alcohol digestion

Avoid sunbathing between 12-3pm. Have a nice hefty lunch then. Eat what you like from the seasonal offer

Cinnamon can be a one salvation for the sugar overload. Helps to balance blood sugar levels and is an excellent digestive. Carry powder with you and take 1 tsp am & pm

Fractured organic cold pressed coconut oil can act as a as sun block and is a very good after-sun oil

If you are constipated, sit in a squat and sip hot water when you wake up. A natural laxative might help such as psyllium husk

If you have diarrhoea, you should not try to stop it. Let it come out if it is caused by bacterial imbalance. If it lasts more than three days then take something or see someone. If it is caused by too much alcohol, pomegranates and nutmeg can help to bind the stools

It sounds like a long list but it really isn’t that complicated. Watch when you eat, time it right and be mindful with alcohol consumption. Not all but many, me included, drink more than usual on holidays. The principle of ayurveda is to combat the effect with the opposite qualities of inflammation. Cool and calm, bitters and astringents that help to are to alkalise in the morning before anything with lemon and chlorella. Have a light breakfast, hefty lunch and for dinner go keto. Keep some cardamon pods with you to boost digestion. Avoid snacking as much as you can and make sure you take 1 tsp of chlorella morning and evening to balance the effect of alcohol.
What’s the best thing about Nature in your opinion? For me, nature, especially forests and the sea in Finland, Mediterranean and UK are the places where I feel the oneness, the continuum of me and the life around me.

Over the years I have practiced yoga and ayurveda which have taught me to feel and harness nature’s healing life forces. The principle is simple: remove the obstacles out of nature’s way and healing, recovery and rejuvenation start taking hold. There’s nothing I need to do except create conditions for healing to happen naturally. Nature’s default mode is to correct imbalances and restore wellbeing. It’s called evolution.

In our retreats in Dorset during the months between November and March we experienced the power of healing on a daily basis, by helping the nature’s life force take charge over the bodies and minds of our clients.

Life force resides is in us all. We human beings are deeply integrated in the web of life. We are nature, not a separate entity from nature like some Oxford dictionary wants us to believe:

“the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations”

Instead, humans are a big part of the phenomena and use the intelligence within the life force to create life, evolve and thus heal, repair and to rejuvenate. We are part of nature and without it we would not have intelligence of evolution.

Our bodies are highly sophisticated and intelligent. The reason why we suffer is because we’ve created barriers for the intelligence to flow. Our body clocks are out of alignment with the light and dark cycle, we eat anytime we feel, we are stressed out, anxious, depressed by living in an environment that does not feel safe and comfortable anymore. We’ve lost emotional intelligence and resilience because of the amount of challenges we need to face on a daily basis.

As mentioned above, healing and recovery are possible if we remove the barriers and allow the body do its own work, called self-regulation. The life force, called prana in ayurvedic terms, is strong and intelligent and will start flowing as water does when a dam is broken

The most important factor that stands in the way of healing, the biggest barrier is tension. Here’s what we do in our ayurvedic retreats to remove it:

Isolate from stressors of everyday life by retreating to nature

Daily ayurvedic massage and treatment sessions for 90 minutes of more if needed

Solid daily ayurvedic routine to pace the body clocks with the sun

Daily practice yoga asanas

Breath work

Meditation and energy work

Seasonal, organic and tasty ayurvedic food

Walks in nature: the fields, the forest and the sea around in this area of outstanding natural beauty

Learn how to manage life outside the retreat environment

Learn the influence of the mind over the body

The second biggest issue is inflammation, especially the chronic one. Inflammation can be caused by many factors, stress (that tension above) being the most pressing one. Those two create a vicious cycle with a state of mind unable to step out of it by making constant decision to eat, drink and do the wrong things. Usually these are immediate pacifiers like processed foods and alcohol. The way to reduce inflammation is done the same way as reducing tension. In addition, intake of specific herbal remedies and ayurvedic treatments targeting e.g. joint pains, inflamed gut, headaches and so on. The retreats create a wonderful opportunity to experience recovery and healing that would be difficult to create in an urban environment. The time spent in isolation with beauty and peace around is unrivalled to anything else

UK based retreats create an advantage with respect to the ones abroad. Stress (causing tension) by travel, long flights, crossing time zones are able to nullify the effects achieved. If you travel far to be healed, you will need time around the retreat to adjust to the environment, climate, new foods, microbial environment, the pace of life and many other factors. You also need to be established well in your wellbeing before you should travel back. If you intend to spend two weeks on an exotic retreat location, you should book at least a month away.

Here in UK, we can create a diet and lifestyle that matches with your local needs and resources, not disturb body clocks by jet lag nor immunity by a drastic change of bacterial exposure. When healing is priority, removal of barriers around it is the most important thing. Traveling far can, on its own, create another layer of barriers and slow or prevent healing all together.

Ayurveda is mainly about self-care and most of the times clients need help in understanding what is in their power to do.

Having started teaching in a yoga teacher training school called Yoga London in 2010 she developed her interest in education and launched Jivita Academy of Ayurveda to respond to the high demand of quality courses with hands-on approach for therapists and nutritionists.

Her passion in education is also visible in client work. Anu is passionate about translating ancient wisdom of healing into modern context. She empowers her clients to take charge of their own health by increasing awareness in nutrition based on their individual needs.

Fasting

You can’t heal your bloating or any other digestive problem by eating more. Some of you might say it does help regurgitation and yes, for a moment but it does not resolve the problem. For acidity, you need to fast because the acid is caused mainly by fermentation of food that stays too long in your gut.

Your gut can only heal and improve its functionality if it is empty for at least 4 hours between meals and especially, fast in the evenings. Morning fasts are just damage control for the load of food that has been eaten late. If you want to heal and control weigh, evening should be your fasting focus.

Hot water

Whilst fasting, you can take sips of hot water once every 10 minutes. Hot water helps the food to move down as it relaxes gut walls. It also stimulates digestive enzyme activity and removes excess mucous. It calms down the nerves lining the gut wall thus reducing chances of cramps and spasms.

The etheric oils are muscle relaxants, it reduces excess mucous, kindles up your digestive fire, lowers down inflammation and is also breath freshener. Keep pods in your pocket or anywhere easy to reach. Crush the seeds from inside the pod between your teeth to a fine powder and sip hot water on top.

Resolving digestive problems is not very difficult, however, the solutions usually require you to make behavioural changes. It’s not the food, but how and when you eat it. Changing mealtimes, emphasising lunch instead of dinner, eating slowly and without stress, chewing, chewing, and again, chewing. First aid kit is for emergencies. If you have bloating and other digestive problems, the first thing is to simplify, eat slowly and chew like you never chewed before. Avoid creating the reason for getting the kit out.

Analysis

47-year-old female with underlying Chronic Fatigue, acute BurnOut, Excess Weight, Skin problems, Lymphatic Congestion, Lump in the breast

Location: Wraxall Yard, Dorset, Jivita Ayurveda 12-day Panchakarma Retreat

Read the full case study here

Ayurvedically speaking, ME can be diagnosed a tridoshic imbalance where the body has lost its intelligence of self-regulation, i.e. ability to return to homeostasis. It is mainly a problem at subtle levels of being which makes it harder to tackle with just diet and lifestyle changes. ME requires a more sophisticated and profound line of treatment targeting koshas where patterns of behaviour lodge. The bodymind has to be reawakened to remember normal functionality by realigning the body clocks and to re-connect with the healing source of life. In my view there might be a dysfunction, a some sort of amnesia of the connection between the atman and buddhi, the individual soul and the universal soul, the latter being the source providing the blueprint for life.

Analysing ME from panchakoshic viewpoint, the condition is a deep-rooted illness affecting the koshas at every level, especially at pranamaya and vijnanamayakoshas. Their dysfunction, in turn, influence anna and manomaya koshas creating the symptomatology typical of fatigue, exhaustion, cognitive decline, anxiety, depression and general malaise. Because the first four koshas are affected, the bliss state in the anandamaya kosha, the profound sense of wellbeing, is unavailable for sufferers of ME. Vijnanamayakosha is the layer that allows us to connect with buddhi, the universal soul.

Our panchakarma program proved particularly effective by addressing the need to bring intelligence back with a properly flowing prana. Prana is the carrier of intelligence and by addressing the energetic body first, the physical and mental bodies could be brought back to proper functionality. Yoga practices followed by abhyanga with nadi tracing anuloma and viloma strokes and marma therapy allowed the body to start releasing established patterns harmful to health and wellbeing. Afternoon therapy sessions addressed the energetic field again through marmas, myofascial release and pranic healing.

Dinacharya (daily routines) of our program allowed the body clocks to come back to balance by practicing small intermittent fasting routine with only one solid meal at lunch. This helped the gut to clear itself. The days were planned well in order to avoid excess hunger and cravings. Gurmar (Gymnema sylvestre) curbed sweet cravings, breakfast consisted of high amounts of fat in the form of spiced fatty cacao creating a feeling of satisfaction which in the last day of snehapana lasted the whole day. The client was offered an option for a pureed vegetable soup for supper at 5pm but felt she only needed the golden milk 1 h before bed.

Considering the client ate only one solid meal the gut was left a significant time to heal, digest ama and renew its flora. An empty digestive system enables the rest of the body to go through the process of health, growth and restoration at night: cellular nourishment, detoxification of brain and limbs (pitta time 10pm-2am) and lastly a systemic anti-inflammatory effect (vata time 2-4am). These functions require high amounts of energy which often is stolen by nightly food break down.

A 15–20-minute nap after lunch lying on her left side guaranteed a maximum amount of blood the flow to the gut thus beginning a strong digestive process with maximum absorption rates.

Daily yoga practice focusing on energetic body practices (tapping, tracing meridians, moving in cross patterns, pranayama and meditation on prana) and lymphatic drainage (massaging lymphatic nodes under the arms, massaging neuro-lymphatic points of the abdomen) was helpful not only to relieve symptoms but also to educate the client in activities she can do at home on a daily basis for purposes of prevention. Yoga session was followed by 90 minutes of body treatments for snehana and swedana.

Result

The feeling of coming back to the body started after a few days. After the whole course of therapy, the client found significant relief in signs and symptoms presented at arrival. There was a marked relief from ME symptoms, absence of the signs of burnout, the lump had disappeared from the breast, skin quality had improved significantly, she had lost 5 pounds of weight and felt more toned in her body. Restorative sleeping patterns were established and her bowel movement became satisfying. She feels positive, energised and excited about the future.

Conclusion

My client responded extremely well in both body and mind. It was humbling to see how she progressed day by day and achieved a deep sense of wellbeing in the end.

The purpose of an ayurvedic practitioner is to remove the obstacles in the way of natural healing. Diet, lifestyle, herbs, massage and detoxing all aim at letting the body do what it is designed to do: heal, repair, rejuvenate and restore. In a residential setting the natural healing process can be observed closely without interference from daily stressors of life.

ME, burnout, overweight and obesity, stress, anxiety, depression and other unhealthy manifestations of modern imbalanced lifestyle can be improved or even resolved with panchakarma therapy, however, isolation from the daily life, which is the causative factor of these conditions, is necessary. Within urban context the clients are not surveyed through the day and easily slip and most of the times keep carrying on with their stress inducing lives. Residential set up is ideal for not only healing and increasing resilience to stress but also a great opportunity for educating on how to take hold of one’s own health, which is already a very empowering piece of learning the clients take home after the process. n

Ayurveda, backed up by the most recent scientific research (such as microbiology) regards the gut as the prime initiator of bodymind’s imbalances and disease. The ancient practices addressing gut health in order to reverse degenerative brain diseases and psychological imbalances are proving to be the winning deal in terms of health and wellbeing of the mind. The gut and the brain work in unison. Following the recommendation by Dr Deepak Chopra, using the word “bodymind” is a way to emphasise the fact that those seemingly different organs two never act alone.

We may call this experience “gut feeling”.

Our bodyminds are in a constant alert for danger, monitoring the environment, making judgements based on our conditioning. When danger is not around, we feel calm and at peace. Feelings of safety and comfort accompany this state of being.

When some sort of threat presents, we get into a state of defense depending on the level of the perceived threat. We might not yet see danger, but our gut has spotted it already. That odd feeling that something’s not right that might result in worry, anxiety, or even a sudden need to go to the toilet, odd cramps and spasms, butterflies and other messages from the gut are usually an indication that we are feeling vulnerable.

When there is an unexplained feeling that everything is fine, when we make an uninformed decision based on the fact that it just feels right, it’s the gut delivering that message. When you suddenly feel an instant connection with someone it is a sign that your gut allows that interaction to happen.

Gut messages are those feelings we call intuition. We should listen to these messages that come from the deepest of our bodyminds because they tell the tale of our subconscious programming. The brain is programmed from childhood to trust and to distrust in order to be safe and comfortable. Sometimes these patters become faulty and certain things feel overpoweringly dangerous even if the actual threat is small. When I set up my business 13 years ago, word “marketing” made me go blank in mind and my gut twisted and turned.

Putting myself out there put me in a state of fear like nothing else. My gut reactions were not based on reality but on my early life patterns of low self-confidence.

The point is, if you find yourself having strong gut feelings that do not match the actual reality, you’ve found out a pattern and you can start healing. It starts by addressing gut health because when gut heals, the brain heals as well and in the next paragraph I’ll tell you why.

Satisfying poop gives a serotonin high

The best sing of good gut health is a satisfying non-offensive morning poop. Serotonin, one of the feel-good hormones that also works as a neurotransmitter, is mainly created in the gut. Around 95% is created in the deepest recesses of our abdominal cavity. When the contents of the colon are released well, it reflects in our mental state. The feeling of satisfaction is so high you want to go and tell the tale. With good gut function the brain feels a high and it is all due to serotonin release. In addition, the sense of achievement releases dopamine. That’s a great way to start the day!

We all know what happens in our head when our number two is not right. I’m sure most of you readers have had constipation in some form and how it acts in the mind. The congestion is soon so overpowering that you can’t think of anything else. You become obsessed of the fact that you can’t go which makes things even worse.

Sufferers of IBS, Crohn’s disease and other gut related functional and inflammatory conditions know well how their mental states reflect on the gut. Stress and anxiety are notoriously bad for digestive health. The good news is that, rather than go to therapy, or whilst waiting for your appointment, you can address the gut first, which then helps you to recover from detrimental mental patterns as serotonin starts kicking in.

Gut health reflects on ageing

There is a direct relationship between your internal skin and external skin. The more you mistreat your gut the sooner you show signs of ageing.

The most detrimental activity for ageing in both body and mind are late evening meals. Night time should be dedicated to healing and repairing from daily damage. This is prevented by nightly digestion, an activity that clogs the drains of the body causing puffiness, inflammation and early signs of ageing.

Gut governs the mind through the vagus nerve, hormones and bacteria

Gut sends messages to the brain through different routes. The highway of nerves between the two ends is called the vagus nerve. When this nerve is stimulated the gut relaxes. Majority of traffic is directed from the gut to the brain. Only 25% of messaging comes from the brain.

The vagus nerve passes information between the gut to the brain via nerve impulses but gut also signals the brain also by hormones and bacteria. Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that create an interplay between hunger and satiety.

Bacteria’s contribution to gut health is well known and not only they help digestion, production of vitamins and essential fatty acids (butyric acid aka ghee!) they also have a big role in cognitive functions for both good and bad. Diverse, seasonally changing bacteria help the brain to perform at its best. This can be achieved best by living with the cycles of nature, in other words ayurvedic diet and lifestyle routines.

Beliefs define gut behaviour

The messages towards the gut from the brain are based on perception, or more correctly, on our beliefs. What we believe to experience in our head, good or bad, passes through the vagus to the organs creating a sense of ease or butterflies depending what the level of safety. Walking on the country lane, spotting a snake might cause a reaction of fear and tension. When we realise it being a stick, our bodymind relaxes again. Our belief about the stick defined the way our body behaves: tension or relaxation, especially in the gut.

An unhealthy gut tends to overreact in perceived situations of danger.
The first step for healing the gut

Healing and repairing the digestive tract is surprisingly easy. Simplify, simplify, simplify is the way to strong gut health. Less is more. Eating more food does not heal the gut. If there are problems do not eat more, whatever the gut issue at stake. When digestion is ongoing, the gut lining does not have a chance to repair. Fasting after 5pm is a safe measure for everyone.

The lining of the gut can renew itself in three days. Small intermittent fasting with “baby food” such as tasty pureed soups, bone broth or porridge and digestive herbs according to the characteristics of the imbalance. When stronger measures need to be taken, Ayurveda offers multiple options, the best being a full panchakarma procedure which we offer in Dorset three times a year. Jivita Ayurveda’s retreats are a powerful way to recover, to bring back the intelligence of healing to the bodymind.

Ayurvedically observed mushrooms are inherently heavy, warming and grounding, helps us to rest and sleep. By this logic of polarities, they are appropriate in a moment when we feel light, dry and cold. Just like when you feel cold you get better by warm comforts. The law of opposites is set in physics.

Each food item and activity can be qualified. There is no such thing that cannot be qualified. Try thinking about something, anything in the world, and you can immediately give qualifying words to it. Adjectives are imbued into everything.

Qualities can be set in opposite pairs. Hot – cold, heavy – light, dry – moist. Put this principle in practice and you find it’s something you do all the time. When your skin is dry you moisturise, when you feel hot you cool down. If you eat drying foods, such as asparagus (it makes you pee) you’ll reduce excess liquidity, puffiness in other words.

The qualities and the polarity theory mean that everything can be potentially used as medicine, mushrooms and all other “banned” vegetables included. We need their qualities to be in direct opposition to the feelings in us that need balancing,

The defining factor are the qualities present, the ones we feel in the moment.

We have the context to think because…

Everything can be equally toxic. If you feel heavy and sleepy already and need to stay awake, mushrooms not the best remedy food for you.

They also increase immunity and stamina, well needed in winter.

Nature is very clever. What grows in each season is appropriate to balance seasonal imbalances and disorders. What grows in summer is juicy and sweet to balance the effects of heat. Spring foods are light and detoxifying to balance the heavy wet climate. Winter brings dryness and lightness and hearty winter foods are the best remedy. Creamy mushroom pasta is a perfect ayurvedic lunch in winter.

ENERGETICS

Mushrooms, and all other food items, can be described with qualities. There is, however, another dimension of food, in addition to the qualitative approach, namely the food energetics. By understanding the energetics, we can arrive to the conclusion that mushrooms, and any other food item for that matter, can be enjoyed as healthy food.

Food energetics refer to food items’ ability to stimulate or calm the bodymind. Chilli and coffee are stimulants. Mushrooms are the opposite. They calm and ground. The stimulating energy is called rajasic whilst the calming and grounding one is called tamasic. We need both these energies to carry out our lives. Rajas equals action, tamas equals inaction.

When an organism performs activities and rest in harmony it is said to be in a sattvic state, the third dimension of the energetics. Sattva is a given, inherent quality to all plants and animals, except humans.

The sattvic aspect of plants is a result of them following the cyclic life of nature and doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing. They live their dharma 100%. They cannot choose to stop growing or procreating. They cannot decide to go for a walk, a behaviour untypical to them. Humans can stop moving, lie on a couch and watch tv with a bucket of ice cream, all day long. We have the choice and our choices are often not so sattvic.

Sattva is a positive energetic stamp on rajasic and tamasic foods. It is found in fresh, organic, local and seasonal foods that have grown mature in their natural habitat, are eaten fresh, are organic and seasonal. When these elements are gone food is less healthy and energetically negative. It can irritate or suppress the mind. Processed foods are the worst of them.

Sattva is not a separate state on its own. The balance is in the activity or in the rest. If your life is in balance, you feel like its flowing. If there’s no flow, you struggle or feel like things are not moving to the right direction. You might be in bed but can’t fall asleep or have a terrible nightmare whilst sleeping and wake up exhausted. Flow and restoration are the effects of sattva affecting action and inaction

Mushrooms grow in perfect balance and flow with nature’s cycles. They surface right when we need them. Their nature corresponds exactly to our nutritional needs during their appearance. They are sattvic by abiding to the commands of Mother Nature. Assuming they grows in the forest and not on the side of a motorway, we can say they are pure and sattvic with a healthy tamasic twist.

Tomatoes often suffer the same treatment in the hands of ayurvedic food dietetics. Still, there is a whole Mediterranean area that feed on tomatoes almost daily and still they are considered to be enjoying the healthiest of diets in the world. There should all be dead by now!

Tomato belongs to the nightshade family with aubergines peppers and potatoes. They come in season in summer and can be kept or preserved for the winter. Most interestingly, the nightshades are mainly eaten cooked. Cooking eases digestibility of these vegetables (fruits actually). Cooking and seasoning makes them easier to digest. Raw tomatoes are a struggle to digest and should be avoided by those who have a weak digestive power which makes me enter the third point in my quest to justify the inclusion of the banned fruits and vegetables in our ayurvedic diet.

DIGESTIVE POWER – AGNI

Digestibility defines the nutritional value of your food. Digestibility is hugely improved by cooking food, especially of potato and aubergine. Who would eat them raw anyway? Tomatoes can be eaten raw. However, cooking them releases lycopene, one of the most powerful antioxidants found so far.

There’s no denying, nightshades are more difficult to digest, especially if you eat them raw. By cooking them you get delicious dishes with easy digestibility. Imagine, dishes consisting only of nightshades like Greek moussaka should be banned? Not from my diet, thanks.

To conclude, food choices need to be appropriate for the context, timing and obviously, our own sensitivities. Without absolute no-nos, everything that is freshly prepared and cooked and eaten with respect, that is seasonal, organic and local has a potential of enhancing balance in you by its sattvicity. Understanding the variables at play you can certainly enjoy foods that might pose a challenge otherwise.

The title of this article is a bit provocative but not far from truth. The truth is in the nature. When we eat and do things that are natural to us then within those limits we can find that every food has value when it is eaten with respect and placed and timed right.

Viva la mushroom!
